Honda Factory Warranty in Canada: What Is Covered and When It Ends

Your new Honda comes with factory coverage. Here is what it is, and what happens when it ends.

How long is the Honda factory warranty in Canada?

A new Honda in Canada comes with 3 years / 60,000 km of basic coverage and 5 years / 100,000 km on the powertrain, whichever comes first.

Some items run longer: the hybrid system and EV battery (8 years / 160,000 km, on hybrid models and electric vehicles only) and rust perforation (5 years, no distance limit). Terms vary by item. The owner’s manual and warranty booklet are the reference.

The Honda warranty in Canada has two main parts: basic coverage and the powertrain warranty. Each one ends at whichever limit you reach first, years or kilometres. Rust perforation and roadside assistance end by time only.

Two examples, not statistics. A driver who covers 25,000 km a year passes 60,000 km before the end of year three, so the kilometres end the basic coverage first. A driver who covers 12,000 km a year has about 36,000 km at the three-year mark, so for that driver the years run out first.

When does the Honda warranty expire?

After a warranty ends, the owner pays for the repairs it used to cover, unless a plan applies.

At 3 years / 60,000 km, basic coverage ends.
Repairs to the systems it covered, such as climate control, brakes, electrical and steering, become your cost. Factory roadside assistance runs for 3 years, no distance limit, so it ends at the three-year mark whatever the kilometres.
At 5 years / 100,000 km, the Honda powertrain warranty in Canada ends.
Powertrain repairs become your cost. Rust perforation coverage runs for 5 years, no distance limit, so it ends at year five whatever the kilometres.
At 8 years / 160,000 km, the hybrid system and EV battery terms end.
This applies to hybrid models and electric vehicles only. Our hybrid and EV guide explains what Honda Plus covers on those models.

Ending changes who pays, not the car. It means the question of who pays for a covered repair changes. Honda Plus is the manufacturer’s way to keep protection going after the factory dates. Its term includes the factory years, as the timeline below shows.

Honda Plus versus the factory warranty

Can I buy Honda Plus after the factory warranty expires?

Honda’s published rules for Honda Plus concern model years and kilometres, not whether the factory warranty is still active: Canadian-market vehicles up to 5 model years old and under 100,000 km. Both conditions must be met. Model years 2022 and 2023 require a Honda Plus vehicle inspection certificate. If your Honda meets them, you may still qualify after the factory warranty expires. Your advisor confirms the rest.

In practice, the kilometre limits line up. The powertrain warranty ends at 5 years / 100,000 km, whichever comes first, and Honda Plus eligibility requires a vehicle under 100,000 km. Above 100,000 km, Honda refers to a separate Honda Plus price list for used vehicles. Your advisor will tell you what applies.

Honda Plus is the extended warranty program of Honda Canada Inc., sold through authorized Honda dealers. New to it? Start with what Honda Plus is. Not sure where your own vehicle stands? The coverage checker shows how much coverage is left, and the eligibility guide explains Honda’s rules in full.

Honda’s rule, not a reading from your vehicle. Up to 5 model years and under 100,000 km.

When should I decide?

Honda Plus is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date at 0 km, not from the day you buy it, so waiting does not move your coverage forward. If your factory coverage is ending, you may still qualify when your vehicle is within Honda’s limits. What changes with time is how much of the plan remains, because its end date is fixed by your delivery date.

  1. Basic factory warranty: 3 years / 60,000 km
  2. Powertrain: 5 years / 100,000 km
  3. Honda Plus: up to 8 years / 200,000 km

Example only, not a quote: on an 8-year / 200,000 km plan, a vehicle that is already 3 years and 60,000 km old has at most 5 years / 140,000 km of Honda Plus coverage left.

Honda Plus term, up to
8 years
or up to
200,000 km

Plan terms include the factory warranty, so “8 years” means 8 years of total coverage counted from delivery, not 8 extra years on top.
