Honda Plus vs a Third-Party Extended Warranty: What Is Different?
Most extended warranties come from either the manufacturer or an independent company. Here is how to tell them apart, and the questions to ask before you buy either.
The eight questions work for any provider. The Honda Plus answers come from Honda’s published sources, and Honda Plus carries a 30-day full refund.

What is the difference between Honda Plus and a third-party extended warranty?
Honda presents Honda Plus as its own program, sold through authorized Honda dealers, with a $0 deductible on a covered component breakdown, free transfer under most conditions and a 30-day full refund. A third-party contract comes from an independent company. The two can differ in who issues it, when the term starts, where you repair, which parts are used and what you pay per claim.
In Canada, an extended car warranty comes either from the vehicle’s manufacturer or from an independent company, whose contract is often called a third-party or aftermarket warranty. Comparing them is easier one difference at a time.
Magog Honda is an authorized Honda dealer that sells this program.
- Who issues it
- Honda presents Honda Plus as its own program, not a dealer’s own product, and the Honda Plus Service Provision given at purchase names the contract party.
- When the term starts
- Repair coverage is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date, at 0 km, whenever you buy, so time and kilometres used before you buy count against the plan.
Where you repair, and what the contract names
Two of the five differences, as they show up on the day you need a repair.

Where the repair happens
For a covered repair, have the vehicle taken to the Honda dealer of your choice. Coverage applies in Canada and the continental U.S. Ask any provider whether it lets you choose the repair shop.
What the contract names
Ask any provider which parts its contract names, new manufacturer parts, equivalent parts or used parts, and who will do the repair.
Eight questions to ask about any extended warranty
Eight questions cover most of what separates one extended warranty from another: who issues it, when the term starts, where you can repair, which parts are used, what you pay per claim, whether you can transfer or cancel, and what is excluded. Ask them of every provider, in writing.
| Question | What to ask | Honda Plus: Honda’s published terms |
|---|---|---|
| Who issues the contract? | Which company issues the contract, and which pays an approved claim? | Honda presents Honda Plus as its own extended warranty program, sold through authorized Honda dealers. The Honda Plus Service Provision given at purchase names the contract party and who pays an approved claim. |
| When does the term start? | Does it count from the day you buy or from the vehicle’s first delivery? From 0 km or from today’s odometer? | Honda Plus is counted from your vehicle’s original delivery date at 0 km, not from the day you buy the plan. Waiting does not move your coverage forward: an 8-year plan still ends 8 years after delivery, or at its km limit, whichever comes first. Honda also recommends buying when you acquire the vehicle. |
| Where can I have it repaired? | Any shop, a list of approved shops, or one network? Do you pay first and wait for a refund? | For a covered repair, have the vehicle taken to the Honda dealer of your choice. Territory: Canada and the continental U.S. Outside Canada you pay for the repair first and your selling dealership reimburses eligible claims. Moving within Canada changes nothing. |
| Which parts are used? | New manufacturer parts, equivalent parts or used parts? Is it written in the contract? | Genuine Honda parts and Honda-trained technicians (Honda’s wording). |
| What do I pay per claim? | Is there a deductible, charged per visit or per repair? Is there a limit per claim? | $0 deductible on a covered component breakdown. |
| Can I transfer it? | If you sell, can the next owner keep the plan? Is there a fee? | Free transfer (under most conditions). |
| Can I cancel, and what do I get back? | Is there a full-refund window? After it, how is the refund worked out? | Cancel for any reason within 30 days of the plan purchase date for a 100% refund, through the Honda dealer. Refund terms after 30 days are in your contract. |
| What are the limits and exclusions? | Can you read the whole contract before paying? What is excluded, and what keeps the plan in effect? | The Honda Plus Service Provision (the contract) sets out all terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions, and prevails over this page. Maintain your vehicle as Honda recommends in the owner’s manual to keep the plan in effect. |
Take the list with you
Print this page or copy the questions. Ask each provider to answer in writing, then compare the answers with the contract itself. If an answer is not in the contract, it is not part of what you are buying.

Why prices are not directly comparable
Two prices are only comparable when they buy the same thing. Before you compare, work out the cost per remaining year of coverage, what each plan caps, and when its term starts. This is a method, not a claim: it works the same way for every provider, including Honda Plus.
Count the coverage you will really have. From the start date to the end date or kilometre limit, whichever comes first.
Note what is capped. Limits per claim or in total, and any deductible.
Check when the term starts. From the day you buy, or from first delivery at 0 km, as with Honda Plus, so time and kilometres used before you buy count against the plan. See the coverage clock.
Then divide: total price ÷ years of coverage left.
Honda’s own price list says the dealer may sell for less. Two quotes for the same Honda Plus plan can therefore differ, so match plan, vehicle and kilometres first. Show us a written quote from a Canadian Honda dealer for the same Honda Plus plan at a lower price and we’ll match it. Conditions apply. See the price-match terms. For the reasoning, read how one contract can carry different prices.

Where to check a company before you buy
Before you buy any extended warranty, find out who is selling it and read the full contract. Consumer-protection offices and consumer organizations publish guidance you can read first. Ask for the company’s legal name, address and permit or licence numbers, and keep copies.

Questions for the seller
- Who is the seller? A legal name, an address and a phone number you can call back.
- Where is the full contract? Ask to read the whole text before you pay.
- What if you change your mind? Get the cancellation terms in writing.

When a third-party plan may make sense
Honda Plus is not available for every vehicle. A Honda older than 5 model years, or a U.S.-specification import, falls outside the program, and a third-party extended warranty may be the option left to you. Honda lists Canadian-market vehicles up to 5 model years old and under 100,000 km. Use the same eight questions to compare whatever you are offered.
Three cases are worth naming.
- A vehicle older than 5 model years is outside Honda Plus.
- A U.S.-specification import. Canadian-market vehicles only. A U.S.-specification import is not eligible.
- A vehicle over the kilometre limit is different: Above 100,000 km, Honda refers to a separate Honda Plus price list for used vehicles. Your advisor will tell you what applies.
For another brand, the checklist above still applies to any third-party extended warranty in Canada.
